The Dingess Tunnel

In 1892, the coal industry was booming and decided to expand a railway between Lenore and Wayne, West Virginia. This railway brought in many Chinese and African American workers to construct this mile long tunnel. Their families followed. It was told that the locals didn’t take outsiders well and they would wait at the entrance and exit to kill. The crimes against the outsiders is one of the several reasons why Mingo county was named Bloody Mingo.

In 1905, other tracks were created by the Tug River and the Dingess Tunnel was used for horses and buggy and eventually cars. To this day the Dingess Tunnel is a single lane road that serves as a main highway for cars. It is a well sought after destination for many motorsports enthusiast.
